Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder are not quirky variants of emotional disorders such as depression, obsessionality or even personality disorder even though they cause personal anguish to a notable degree. Even among seasoned professionals there are many myths about what these disorders are, how they develop and what kind of therapy is appropriate to help people to recover and regain a healthy relationship with food.

According to the Mental Health Foundation current estimates suggest that up to 1 per cent of women in the UK between the ages of 15 and 30 suffer from anorexia nervosa, and between 1 and 2 per cent suffer from bulimia nervosa. As many cases of eating disorder are unreported or undiagnosed, the actual figures are likely to be much higher. Eating disorders are much more likely to occur among women than men. However, for anorexia, there is also evidence to suggest that in the younger age group (7;12;14 years), up to 25 per cent of cases are boys.

If you are diagnosised with an eating disorder by a qualified professional, treatment may include counselling, dietary education and sometimes medication, usually provided by a multi-disciplinary team who work together with the person and sometimes their family. In cases where a person is severely malnourished through anorexia, hospitalisation might be necessary until their health improves to the point where other treatments can become useful. The preferred psychological approach is usually based on cognitive behaviour therapy, using techniques which help a person to identify contributing factors, regain healthy minds and bodies, and live the life they want without eating and food dominating everthing.

All clients must participate in individual counselling prior to beginning the group program. Accepptance in the group is not automatic and is at the discretion of the counsellor.

Treatment Model: The Eating Disorder Program at Calgary Counselling Centre operates on the principle that there are underlying physical, psychological, social and familial issues that may support an eating disorder. The potentially debilitating and life-threatening consequences of eating disorders require the Eating Disorder Program to work within a multi-disciplinary team approach. This requires case management and continued consultation between the primary counsellor, dietician, family physician and where possible, a psychiatrist. A team focus provides the client with a comprehensive scope of treatment. Within individual therapy and the group setting the client learns to manage relationship issues, to discover underlying causes of their disorder, develop insights and make behavioural changes to manage their eating in a healthier manner.

Anorexia and gender issues are complex in relation to anger or more to the point anger-management. Bulimia is one of the eating disorders that relate to relationships. Sexual abuse is in no way responsible for gay psychiatrist or for that matter psychologist or any gender issue. Subsidised & low fee work offered Referral services for GP's available.

And there are vast numbers of adults who are carrying a stone or two more than they should, and who have nothing wrong with them except for the fact that they take in more calories than they use up.

In accordance with the understanding that no one single method of treatment can guarantee recovery from eating disorders, the program offers a variety of specialized services. Please refer to the website for a detailed description of services.
